Do You Do This In Your Marriage?

When conflict arises in your marriage, do you carefully face it head on? Or do you stew quietly over it?

In marriage, you will have times of struggles. You might find that you and your husband get on each other's nerves. Maybe you argue with one another over things that seem insignificant. This is all normal. What matters is how you handle things when these moments arise.

It was about a week ago now, I walked in to the kitchen. Tim was preparing something for his dinner. I mentioned, "I need you to do me a huge favor." His response was, "What do you need now?" Okay, I was not feeling too good at the time, but to me, what he said to me was, "Leigha, you are such a bother, what do you need now?" I even told him that is how his statement made me feel and I would try not to be so needy.

That moment was not a pleasant one for me, but I did make things more than they needed to be. He has since let me know that he does not think I am a bother because he loves doing things for me. He wants to help shoulder the burdens I carry in our relationship. I love that he said that, using words that I use here on the blog with you. That let me know they were from God.

Stew Is For Dinner, Not Conflict

What matters is how you handle conflict when it arises. Normally, I would have taken what he said to me and held on to it. I probably would have stewed over it for a while and then I would have pressed it down.

I would have allowed those careless words to have festered in to anger and then suppressed it until it became depression. Or, as I was still in my festering mode, I might have lashed out saying things that I did not mean.

When conflict arises in your marriage, do you carefully face it head on? Or do you stew quietly over it?

Verses To Pray Over Your Marriage

1. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIRV

Give thanks no matter what happens. God wants you to thank Him because you believe in Christ Jesus.

Prayer

Dear Father, thank You for my husband. I do not know where I would be without him in my life. Father, please help me to always be grateful of the things that he does for me. I know that it is because of our love of Jesus that we are together. Thank You so much. In Jesus' name, Amen

2. Jeremiah 29:11 GNT

I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for.

Prayer

Dear Father, thank You for always being with us and our marriage. When we get discouraged and feel that things are not the way we want, help us to remember that You are in control, Father. Help us to remember that You alone know the plans You have for us and our marriage. You have plans for our prosperity and not disaster. You have plans to bring us the future that we hope for. Thank You so much. In Jesus' name, Amen.

3. Proverbs 16:18 NIV

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

Prayer

Dear Father, please forgive me for any times that I am prideful. Help me to choose to be loving over having to be right. Help me to choose humility over pride. Thank You for revealing this area to me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

4. Matthew 7:3 CEV You can see the speck in your friend's eye, but you don't notice the log in your own eye.

Prayer

Oh Father, please forgive me for any times that I dwell on my husband's flaws. I don't in any way believe that I am perfect or that I manage things better than he does. Please help me to be his cheerleader and celebrate his strengths. I want to build him up with my actions and words and not tear him down. Help me to always focus on the log that is in my own eye, Lord. Help me to have new eyes to see the areas about myself that I need to correct and work on correcting them with Your help. Thank You so much.  In Jesus' name, Amen.

5. Matthew 7:12 Do for others what you would want them to do for you. This is the meaning of the Law of Moses and the teaching of the prophets.

Prayer

Dear Father, thank You for my husband and for putting him in my life. Please help me to always be more focused on his needs than I my own. I want to treat him the way that I want to be treated. In Jesus' name, Amen.

6. Romans 12:18 ERV Do the best you can to live in peace with everyone.

Prayer

Dear Father, thank You for putting my husband in my life. I do not know where I would be without him. Father, please help me to always do the best I can to live in peace with everyone. I want to create peace not conflict in my marriage. I lift our marriage into Your hands and I pray that Your will be done. In Jesus' name, Amen.

7. Philippians 4:6 CEV Don't worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God.

Prayer

Dear Father, please help us to bring our worries, our every concern to You. Help us to learn to pray together over our circumstances instead of living in worry. I want our marriage to be strong with Your help and guidance, Lord. Teach us to pray more and to worry less. In Jesus' name, Amen.

  1. Leigha, I love the verses and the prayers to go with them. I have learned after 18 years of marriage that what I hear my husband say is not at all what he meant to say. I have now started asking him if this is what he said, and most times he will not even recognize that he said what he did. That is where intentional communication comes into play.

    1. You have seemed to hit the nail on the head :). Taking the time to slow down and ask the questions. To check and see if what you heard him say is what he said. Thank you for sharing that.

Sometimes The Answer Is "Wait"

Have you ever "longed" for something? Have you had a deep yearning for something,  but were too afraid to ask for it? ...
