Let's Talk Bags

Do you suffer with chronic pain? Do purses cause you a lot of pain? Maybe it is time to think smaller. Sometimes smaller is better.

I have a love/hate relationship with purses. Oh, I love them. Please don't get me wrong on that. They are so pretty. However, they do not love me.

As far back as I can remember, I have never been one to want to carry a purse. I used to toss my driver's license in the car and just go. No purse was needed for that.

As I got older, I  started to care about how I looked and I wanted my bags to reflect that. Plus they carry everything.

I think it all started, honestly, when I had the need to carry diaper bags for the boys. Over time, I ditched the conventional diaper bag and went with a backpack type of purse. I felt like, if I needed to, I could have carried our kitchen sink in there and still had room.

Years have progressed, chronic illnesses have taken over and I am now back to a love/hate relationship with purses. I think they look good, they carry everything that I need for them to carry, but, they cause me way too much pain.

What Is A Girl To Do?

I dug out a wallet, that I had, that was large enough to carry my cell phone. Then I sat down and went through my purse. I asked myself, "Okay, Leigha, what exactly do you have to carry with you when you go out of the house?"

For me, all I absolutely need to carry in a bag is my driver's license, my list of current medications, my solu-cortef injection, the needles, and some alcohol swabs. Oh, and, of course, my cell phone.

That is the bare necessities for me. As long as I make sure that I have those items, I am good.

This leaves me wondering, why do I always struggle with such a big, heavy bag? Are there bags out there that are cute, small and will carry my bare neccessities?

A Purse For Every Occasion

Yes, I am happy to announce that there are cute, small bags out there for every occasion. They are known as cell phone wallet purses and I love them. Some have hand straps (too cute), some have long straps so you can wear the bag over your shoulder or even crossbody style.

If you are like me and live with chronic pain, it might be time to rethink your purse. If you think you can manage without it for the time that you are out of the house, your neck and shoulder just might thank you for switching to smaller bags. See, sometimes, smaller is better.

2 Corinthians 12:8-10 NIV

Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Prayer

Dear Father, thank You for being with me. Father, even as I suffer, I know that You are still there. I know that Your grace is sufficient for me and Your power is made perfect in my weakness. Help me to be strong as I boast in my weaknesses, Lord. For I know that when I am weak, then I am strong. In Jesus' name,  Amen.

What Are Your Dreams?

What did you want to be "when you grew up"? How has life changed that image?

As a little girl, I wanted to be nurse for newborn babies, you know, "when I grew up".

As I got older, my dreams changed, but not by a whole lot. You see, I knew, even as a little girl, that I was called to do something with children. By the time I was in my teens, I wanted to work in child care taking care of newborns. My heart was to actually attend school in that field, but since my dad was footing the bill,  I had to take what he wanted. In the end, I did not follow through with my school career.

After I met Tim, my dream changed again to being a stay at home mom. I was able to accomplish this when our first son was in kindergarten. In the meantime, I worked in childcare, taking care of the infants.

As I look back, I can see how the Lord has worked everything. I was called to do something with children; my children.

What Is My Purpose Now, Lord?

Now that I am looking at an almost empty nest and I am living with chronic illnesses, there are so many days that I feel useless. What is my purpose now, Lord?

For a while, I threw myself into crocheting. It was my go to comfort thing, my escape. Then the pains in my hands got to be too much for me, so I had to give it up. I won't lie, I miss it.

One day, I felt lead to start up a new blog and have now been doing this for about six months. It is my escape.

Do I Have Dreams For The Future?

Do I have dreams for the future? Tim often tells me that I don't dream. I just try to be realistic and try not to put too much pressure on myself.  I just do not have the same dreams that he does. I dream that the Lord will use my blog to reach someone. I dream that it might reach the struggling women who feel all alone in this world.

I do have a dream that even my ten year old self might be proud of, to write an ebook. It is just a dream, but it sits there in the back of my mind.

I believe that the Lord can still use me. Even now with my almost empty nest, with my chronic illnesses, aches, pains and everything else. The dream may change throughout time, I just need to follow the Lord.

Romans 8:28 NIV

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Prayer

Dear Father, I thank You for being with me. Father, even when I find myself bogged down in pain and feeling useless, please help me to remember that all things work for those who love You and have been called according to Your purpose. Help me to stay focused on You and follow where You lead. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Battling Insecurity

Do you ever feel insecure? Deal with self doubt issues? Just feel like you do not measure up?

On facing issues of insecurity,  you need to remember one thing:

You are not enough.

I am sure the knowledge of that statement stings a bit. However, here is another statement for you:

Jesus is enough.

No matter how insignificant you feel, Jesus is strong enough to handle the situation. Hold on to that hope.

Do you miss out on opportunities because of your insecurities? I know that one all too well myself. It is hard to put myself out there, to take part in things when I fully expect that I am not good enough for that situation or that group of people.

Many are the times that I have passed on taking part in something. Because I knew that I was not good enough. I did not measure up. If I was given a task, I would inevitably mess it up. These self doubts play over and over in my mind until I give in to them and end up missing out on events.

I do not want this to happen for you. Or for me. How about the next time that insecurity rears it's head when you are asked to do something, you say:

I am not sure that I can, however, Jesus is enough and I can do all things with His help.

Ways To Battle Insecurity

1. Look up verses about Bible Figures who struggled.

Do a search for Bible Figures who struggled with depression. Pick one character and study them.

2. Look up Jesus is enough verses.

Do a search for Jesus is enough verses.

3. Write down the verse.

Pick one Jesus is enough verse that speaks to you and write it down. Write it on an index card so you can keep it close by. Whenever you start to feel "not good enough" read over your card. Continue to do this until you have the verse memorized.

Philippians 4:13 GW

I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me.

Prayer

Dear Father, thank You for always being with me.  Father, I confess that I struggle with insecurity, self doubt, and often feel like I just do not measure up. Whenever I feel that way, please help me to remember that You are enough.  According to Philippians 4:13, I know that I can do anything; I can do everything because You are with me and You give me strength. Thank You so much. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Seek To Put Others First

What are you struggling with today? Do you have someone that you trust enough to share with?

I have always longed for a close friend. That "bff" that I can share everything with. The person that I go to when I am sad and say, "Hey, I am feeling blue today." And no matter what, she is there to listen. Oh, and she does not judge, either.

I have been feeling down for several days now. Honestly,  I am not sure what is the cause. I will go as far as to say that I pick up on other people's moods. T was on call over the weekend and dealing with a bit of stress. I picked up those feelings and they became mine.

So what do you do when you feel alone and depressed?

In my ideal world, my "bff" would check in on me, just like she had a sense that something was wrong with me.

What I am learning to do is to put others first. When I am feeling blue, I reach out to someone else that I have not heard from in a while to see how she is doing. Then when I hear back from her, it brightens my day.

3 Reasons To Put Others First

1. It takes the focus off of self.

Putting someone first means that you are focused on her needs and not thinking about yourself.

2. It will help you to feel a little better.

By taking the time to check in on someone, who you have not heard from in a while, you are doing for her what you long for someone to do for you. When she responds back to you, it will change the outlook of your day.

3. It is biblical.

Philippians 2:3 NIV Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,

Romans 12:10 NIV

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Prayer

Dear Father,  thank You for always being with me. Father, help me to remember the importance of being devoted to those that I love. If someone is important to me, help me to make them a priority, Father, according to Your will. Thank You so much for the blessing of loved ones and friendship. In Jesus' name, Amen.
