How To Fight The Christmas Blues

Are you someone who goes into the holidays full of hope and good cheer? Do you struggle, like so many do, and spend this season missing lost loved ones?

What a wonderful time of the year. The leaves have changed colors and are falling in preparation for the winter season. When I step back and look at the picture, it really is a beautiful image.

Thanksgiving and Christmas are holidays that are filled with possibility. At least, that is what I believe. The wonderous time of being around loved ones that you only see during the holidays.

Family and friends get together to eat and hopefully reflect back on the good things that have happened in the past year. You might spend time watching movies, playing games and just catching up with each other.

The above sounds idyllic, doesn't it? It is a little too rosy.

Christmas Is Around The Corner

I have always had a hard time getting through the holidays. First off, it is dark, dreary and cold outside. Then you throw in family that I only ever see on rare occasions and it causes a lot of stress.

I am sitting here with Thanksgiving in my rear window and Christmas is just around the corner, but do you know what I am thinking about? My mom. She passed on December 18, 2012. It makes 6 years this year that she has been gone.

I used to look forward to putting up our tree each year. Once it was up, it gave me something to focus on, something colorful and full of light. We don't put up a tree any more. I can only imagine what would end up happening if we did. Our dogs love

to run

and play

and jump

and climb

and just for fun, chew on everything.

Redirect Your Thoughts

1. Take A Step Back.

When things feel dark, allow yourself some time to just take a step back. Ask the Lord for new eyes to see His wonders.

2. Notice The Colors Around You.

As you take that step back, pay attention to all of the colors that are around you. The bright oranges and yellows of the trees that have not lost all of their leaves. The Christmas lights. Yes, enjoy the Christmas light. Take a ride in the evening and just spend time enjoying all of the colors.

3. Focus On The Good Things That Have Happened.

Spend some time reflecting over the past year. As you do, focus on the good things that happened. A birthday. An anniversary.  A graduation. A trip. The birth of a child. A job promotion. A new job. When you see these moments from the past year, give thanks and praise to the Lord.

Romans 15:13 NIV

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:13 NIV

Prayer

Dear Father, thank You for always being there. Even when I struggle, I know that You are there. Father, I pray that You will give me new eyes this holiday season. Wrap me in Your arms and comfort me as You fill me with the wonder that is Your presence. I pray that You will fill me with joy and peace as I trust in You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

God's Grace

Do you ever have times where you feel like the other shoe is going to drop at any moment? Do you feel like you are just one mistake away from others finding out that you are a "fake"?

Tim confided in me that he is feeling overwhelmed. He said it is like having a sense of doom.

Oh, sadly, I can relate to that feeling. He said that over the years, he has had a hard time understanding why I deal with anxiety and depression the way that I do. Now, he says that he "gets it."

Sufficient Grace

Feelings of overwhelm, anxiety, panic, and depression. Those are all things that I struggle with. However, this time, it is T who is going through these struggles.

Do you ever have times where you feel like the other shoe is going to drop at any moment? Do you feel like you are just one mistake away from others finding out that you are a "fake"?

Did you know that God's grace is already yours? He offers it freely to all who believe in Jesus. So, it does not matter what you have done or have not done. It doesn't matter if you feel like a failure. God's grace is there for you.

According to dictionary.com, grace is the freely given, unmerited favor and love of God.

Believe

Grace is not something that is earned. God gives it freely. If you believe in Jesus, you are covered in God's grace.

Think about those last few statements for a minute. You cannot earn His grace. Nothing you have done will keep you from being covered; as long as you believe in Jesus.

No struggles that you face can keep you from His grace. No anxiety can keep you from it. No depression. You believe in Jesus, you are covered. Hold on to that.

2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

Prayer

Dear Father, thank You.  Thank You for sending Jesus to walk among us. Thank You for sending Him to the cross to die for my sins so that I have a way to reach You. I believe in Jesus and know that I am covered in Your grace. While I may struggle with day to day issues, Your grace is sufficient for me. Your power is made perfect in my weakness. So I will boast about my weaknesses so that Your power may rest on me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Express Your Gratitude

As you go throughout your day, do you give thanks for every blessing that comes your way? Do you spend time complaining about the things that you are unhappy with?

Take a moment and think back over the past few days. Did you take time to thank God for each of the blessings that He revealed to you? Did you, instead, spend time complaining about the things with which you are unhappy?

Slow Down

There are so many blessings that are being revealed to us every day. We only need to slow down long enough to see that they are there.

Express your gratitude every time you notice a blessing and you will start to notice even more of them. The more you focus on each gift from God and give Him thanks, the more the blessings will multiply. Try it.

Look For The Blessings

Give gratitude for the beautiful bird song that wakes you up every morning. Give thanks for the overly excited dog that just wants all of your attention. Give thanks for spelling words, multiplications, long division, because you have been blessed with children and the ability to teach them.

When you are doing your husband's laundry, don't get upset about the task. Give thanks to the Lord for the person that wears those clothes.*

Look for the blessings in your day and spend time thanking the Lord for all that He has done.

Romans 1:20 ERV

There are things about God that people cannot see—his eternal power and all that makes him God. But since the beginning of the world, those things have been easy for people to understand. They are made clear in what God has made. So people have no excuse for the evil they do.

Prayer

Dear Father, thank You for being You. Thank You for the parts of You that I cannot see such as your eternal power. Thank You for helping me to easily understand Your power because of all that You have made. Thank You for all of the many wonderful blessings that You reveal to me every day. Please help me to slow down enough to notice them and give you thanks. In Jesus' name,  Amen.
