Pain Is A 4 Letter Word

How are you doing? How is your pain level? What are the different types of pain that you struggle with?

Pain.

It is another one of those four letter words.

My pain. I am living with fibromyalgia. I have finally been able to see a rheumatologist that is trying to help me with medication.

Sleep Apnea, C-pap, and Claustrophobia, Oh My

I have recently had a sleep study done that revealed sleep apnea. So now, I sleep with a c-pap machine. I have used the machine over a month and I am still struggling with feeling claustrophobic due to wearing the headgear.

Ever since May, I have had this odd icy cold feeling in my outer thigh. So far, nothing has been determined about the reason for that.

Then there are my stomach issues. I have been dealing with bloating, indigestion and weight loss. I have no appetite because I just do not feel good.

No Ovarian Cancer, But More Tests

On a good note, I have found out that there are no signs of ovarian cancer. I will now be going for a colonoscopy which because of my secondary adrenal insufficiency, the thought really scares me.

I do want to mention something else, ever since my gynecologist appointment, I have been having major cramps. I just do not know what to make of that. She, however, is not concerned at all. She said, "As long as you are not bleeding." Um, okay, but I am in pain.

All I want to do is curl up, in the bed, in the fetal position, and cry.

Everything is just so overwhelming for me right now. My gynecologist said that if the colonoscopy does not reveal anything that is helpful, she wants to do a laparoscopy.

Matthew 7:7-8 NIV

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Prayer:

Dear Father,

Help ______ to ask because it will be given to ______. Help ______ to seek because ______ will find. Help ______ to knock because the door will be opened to ______. For when ______ asks, ______ will also receive. When ______ seeks, ______ will also find. And when ______ knocks, the door will be opened ( Matthew 7:7-8 ).
In Jesus' name, Amen.

Bible Reading Plan, Pain

When you think of your pains, do you believe that God's grace is sufficient for you? Can you trust in Him to give you strength as you endure your pain?

Oh Lord, please take this pain away from me. I am really suffering from the weight of it all and just do not have the strength to do my daily chores.

Have you ever pleaded with the Lord to lessen your pain? You are not alone, in your struggles.

I finally had to reach out to my gynecologist's office to find out, well, anything. I was starting to feel like I did not matter. Like I am invisible.

I received a message within 2 hours letting me know that the results from my ultrasound looked good. I guess this means no signs of cancer. I was then asked to come in on July 25th to discuss the next steps.

More tests?

All I want is to feel better. I want to be able to sleep at night without having sharp pain in my thigh wake me up several times.

Now, let's look at Paul. He mentions having a thorn in his side that he asks the Lord, three times, to remove. However, the Lord does not remove it, does He? No. He tells Paul that His grace is sufficient for him.

So, when you think of your pains or your thorn, do you believe that God's grace is sufficient for you? Can you trust in Him to give you strength as you endure your pain?

1 Corinthians 12:6-10 NIV

Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say, or because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Prayer:

Dear Father,

Oh Father, how I suffer. I plead with You to ease my pain. I pray that You will help me to understand that Your grace is sufficient for me and that Your power is made perfect in my weakness. That is why, for Your sake, I will delight in my weaknesses, in insults, hardships, persecutions, and difficulties that I endure. Because I know that when I am weak, then I am strong. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Find The Joy

How do you handle things when you feel overwhelmed by life's struggles? Are you able to find the joy in your trials?

Can I be honest about something with you? I am really struggling with depression.

Everything is piling up on me

I feel like everything is piling up on me and I feel so overwhelmed by it all. I have stomach issues that have been going on for way too long. I have this weird nerve thing in my thigh that is causing me pain. I am not handling the tests well at all.

Then you throw in normal every day things. I still need to make sure the dogs and birds are fed and taken care of. I still need to wash clothes and do dishes.

I feel like I am letting everyone down.

I do not feel good. And, honestly, I just want to curl up in the bed and have a good cry.

Did you know that in James we are told to consider our trials as pure joy (James 1:2)? I find it hard to comprehend. I am in so much pain. I am struggling with having to endure medical tests and not handling them well at all. And I am so depressed. Yet, in this verse, it says, "Find the joy, Leigha, in all your struggles."

I know that I can consider it pure joy and, in fact, I can celebrate because I know that these trials I am suffering mean I am closer to Christ. <--- Amen!

Let's look at this verse as I SOAP through it.

S:

James 1:2 NIV

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,

O:

Consider what pure joy? trials, tests, struggles
When? whenever you face tests, trials, struggles
A few kinds; some kinds of trials? many kinds of trials

A:

Consider it joy, celebrate when I face struggles of many kinds because I know that I am closer to Christ and where He wants me to be

P:

Dear Father,

I lift all of my cares and worries up to You. I pray that You will help me to find the joy in my struggles and to celebrate as I go through these trials because it means I am closer to You and where You want me to be. You are an Awesome God! In Jesus' name, Amen.

You Will Give Me Rest

How well does your body handle tests? Does the mere thought of tests cause you anxiety?

Test number two is now done. Um, I cannot in all honesty say that is true. What do I mean by that?

Well, since you asked.

My second test was a pelvic ultrasound and a transvaginal ultrasound. In case you do not know the difference, one you drink a ton of water for, the other, a probe is inserted inside to look at your ovaries and uterus.

Okay, all of that being said, I do not handle transvaginal ultrasounds well at all. They cause me so much pain that, even though, I am lying down, I am close to passing out.

I was not aware that I was going to have this version of ultrasound when my gynecologist started talking about scheduling one.

It was a lot of stress for me.

The tech girl was a sweetheart. She did not want to do it that way since it causes me so much trouble, but she was not able to see my ovaries the other way. I told her that we she go ahead and try it that way because I knew that my gynecologist was checking for ovarian cancer. I would just do the best that I could.

She was just starting on my left ovary and I had to stop. It was causing weird pain. And today (one day later), I am in a lot of pain.

What does this mean? I honestly have no idea. The tech girl said that since I have so much pain, I could have a CT done. Hmmmm.

Now, I just wait to see what my gynecologist is going to say about this.

How do you prepare for stressful tests?

1. Take moral support with you

It can be very helpful to have someone with you as you go through any type of test. It can be your mother, sister, daughter, friend, husband. In my case, it was my husband.

2. Listen to calming music

I find that listening to soothing music helps me. It is considered "Spa" music. Find something that helps you to feel relaxed and listen to it.

3. Take extra medication, if needed

In my case, since I have secondary adrenal insufficiency, my body does not handle stress well at all. Actually, since my body is already dealing with whatever is going on, any extra stress, at all, is not good. So I need to take extra hydrocortisone to help.

Exodus 33:14 NIV

The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

Prayer:

Dear Father,

Please help me to remember that even though I struggle with pain and I struggle through these tests, Your Presence goes with me and You will give me rest (Exodus 33:14). Thank You for all that you do. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3

When you have odd health issues, do you just carry on? Do you listen to your body and discuss things with your doctor?

I just had my annual gynecologist visit. I talked to her about the odd health issues I have been having. She wants all of these tests done.

She wants to rule out ovarian cancer. Did you know that being bloated and having indigestion, plus losing weight (I forgot about that part) are signs of ovarian cancer? I already knew all of this before my appointment, but I wanted to know what she thought.

What a scary thought! I mean, it is just stomach issues, but it is not getting any better. No. Matter. What. I. Do.

Tests, Tests, And More Tests

My primary care doctor ordered my first round of tests. He sent me to have x-rays done of my pelvis, hip, back, femur and other related areas. I was put in a lot of odd positions for those x-rays, but I know it will be worth it.

Next will be a pelvic ultrasound. This is to check the ovaries. Last year, when I had an ultrasound done, everything looked fine.

Another test that will most likely be scheduled is a colonoscopy. I have never had one done. T says the worst part is drinking the nasty stuff you have to drink beforehand. My fear is that it will cause me more stomach issues. You know diarrhea or vomiting and my body cannot handle too much of that.

Another test that "might" be scheduled is an MRI of my spine. I might have a bulging disc causing the nerve issue in my thigh. Plus my mom passed from a form of cancer on her spine. I will know more about this once I get the results back from my x-rays.

°°X-ray results are in. Everything is normal. I have to be honest about something here. When I heard this news, my initial thought was, "okay, what does that mean? Now what?" In reality, it means that my spine, hip, femur, etc are normal. The issue is not with any of those areas. No MRI needed. Celebrate this victory!°°

This goes without saying, but I am scared.

I do know that chances are very good that this will not be ovarian cancer, but I am trying to prepare myself.

How exactly do you prepare yourself to hear the words, "you have cancer"?

Preparing For Scary News

1. Have a good support system

Make sure that you have someone with you to hold your hand and keep you encouraged.

2. Ask questions

Between you and your caregiver, come up with a list of questions. If you do not understand something, ask for an explanation. Make sure that your support person knows that he/ she can ask questions, too (as this is a scary time for both of you). However, make sure that he/she does not talk all over you. It is important that your questions, thoughts, feelings are heard.

3. Lean on the Lord

That's right. Trust in the Lord. Lean on Him during this hard time and do not pull away. This is something that I really need to work on. He knows what you are facing and He is there with you every step of the way.

Isaiah 41:10 NIV

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10 NIV

Prayer:

Dear Father,

Please help ______ not to fear for you are with ______; help ______ not to be dismayed, for you are ______ God.  You will strengthen ______ and help ______; you will uphold ______ with your righteous right hand (Isaiah 41:10 NIV). In Jesus' name, Amen.

Isaiah 41:13 NIV

For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.

Prayer:

Dear Father,

Please help ______ to remember that you are ______ God. You take hold of ______'s right hand and say to ______, Do not fear; you will help ______ ( Isaiah 41:13 NIV). In Jesus' name, Amen.
